The Tortured Hearts Ball – February 13th. Want to go for FREE?

On Saturday, February 13th, I’ll be headlining the Tortured Hearts Ball warehouse party with amazing visuals from AVicious and a full evening’s lineup of entertainment.

From the Silk Road Productions press release:

“On Saturday, February 13th, 2010, San Diego will experience heartbreak in a grotesquely beautiful Cupid-less apocalypse – the inaugural Tortured Hearts Ball, where Despair will meet Desire, and with a lascivious vengeance!

Come celebrate all things erotic and bizarre at our ode to the bitter and the lonely, the bound and the broken, at an event too bold for San Diego.

You will come dressed in your best BLACK and RED. You will be engrossed in our demented world mildly inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass. You will be enjoying ridiculously strong drinks. You will have front row seats to a Lingerie Fashion show. You will rock out to one of San Diego’s premier indie bands. You will be partying with our DJs until 5am – including headlining DJ Edgartronic + AVicious!”

So, you want to get in for FREE?? Yeah, you do. Here’s how.

My Top 10 Tracks of 2009 – The Top 3

Ok, so I’m a little late on this. Whatever, I was masssively drunk and/or hungover pretty much for the duration of the holiday.

That said, here are my Top 3 tracks of 2009.

3) MSTRKRFT – Heartbreaker (Laidback Luke Remix)

March saw the long-awaited sophomore effort from MSTRKRFT, “Fist Of God”. Along with the hipster’s “Livin’ La Vida Loca” (“Bounce”), the album featured “Heartbreaker” an unexpected soft moment from R&B crooner John Legend. It quickly found its way into my early-evening sets.

So, once the Laidback Luke remix hit, I was more than ready to drop it into my peak hour stuff. His masterful retouch shows why he’s been at it for so long. It easily takes the third spot on my Top 10 of ‘09 list.

2) The Bloody Beetroots – Warp 1.9

Dateline: April 20th, 2009. Indio, CA. I’m hanging out w/one of the faithful X1FM listeners in the Sahara tent at the Coachella festival. We just had our collective minds steamrolled by the barrage of noise and beats that was the Bloody Beetroots’ DJ set.

Every year I make the trek out to the desert, I wind up inspired by one artist. In 2008, it was Boys Noize. In ‘09, it was the Beetroots. For that reason alone, “Warp 1.9″ (their set opener) is my #2 of ‘09.

1) Bird Peterson – Zutopong

The reasons this song made the top spot on my list:

1) Anyone who knew me personally knew that I had an ever-growing affair with dubstep in 2009. This track encompasses what I love about the genre.
2) Easily my favorite Bird Peterson track, who annihilated El Dorado one fateful Saturday night over the summer.

My Top 10 Tracks of 2009 – Number 4

4) The XX – Crystalised (Rory Phillips Remix)

Yes, they were everywhere. In your friend’s car, on your iPhone, in coffee shops…wherever you went, you could not escape the sweet, fragile, “less is more” sound of The XX (tangent: a ladyfriend and I jokingly refer to them as “Dos Equis”). Well, I was right there with you. Hell, I practically fell out of my seat when I found out I was playing w/them earlier this year.

Needless to say, their sound also found its way to the dancefloor thanks to this equally simple-yet-effective remix from London’s own Rory Phillips.

The Visual Underground Reunion – January 7th at the Casbah

From their press release:

“San Diego’s original and longest-running Film+Rock+Art showcase is back for a special, not-to-be-missed reunion event JAN 7th at the CASBAH. The TVU Reunion will present a myriad of new short films, animations and videos collected and arranged with the intent to mix well with drink. Also featured will be a custom art installation set to the vibe of DJ Edgartronic and designed to showcase works by artists from San Diego to Santa Fe. Capping the night will be two stellar local bands accompanied by the AVicious VJs who will be providing a special “venue wide” projection installation that will blow the pockets from your skinny jeans. A live show unlike any other returns to it?s San Diego roots for the first time in 2-Years!”

5) Depeche Mode – Fragile Tension (Kris Menace Remix)

Yes, the obligatory DM entry on my countdown.

Their Grammy-nominated record “Sounds Of The Universe” saw some of electronic music’s most-hyped producers commissioned for the remix treatment. A few of the more memorable renditions included Caspa’s take on “Wrong” and Herve’s grinding remix of “Peace”.

However, the one that stood out to me was Kris Menace’s version of “Fragile Tension”. Equal parts aggressive and smooth, Menace manages to keep the original spirit of the song while adding his spacey signature sound.

It’s rumored that this is one of the band’s favorite remixes. I’d say that’s a ringing endorsement.

My Top 10 Tracks of 2009 – Number 6

6) Proxy – Dancing In The Dark (Dubstep Refix)

Just awesome. Really. No other description needed on this one.

7) Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll

Karen O and Co.’s attempt at a club anthem, complete with “dance ’til you’re dead” refrain. I went head-over-hells with this one, as did a lot of other DJs. It spawned a near-avalanche of remixes (most notably A-Trak). Catchy when you’re sober, epic when you’re five shots deep.
